How to make 2020 your best year ever

How to make 2020 your best year ever

Do you feel like 2019 has gone by in the blink of an eye? With 2020 just around the corner and the start of a new decade, there’s never been a better time to set yourself up for success. How will you make 2020 your best year ever?

Creating success is different for everyone. But the one thing that is the same for everyone? Reaching your goals and experiencing the success you dream of is all about having a game plan. Professional sports teams know this, and this same idea applies to your business, your employees and team, and even to yourself personally.

So get ready to start 2020 and the new decade with lots of energy, consistency and clarity on where to put your focus.

Reflect on the past year (and the last decade)

When did you last take the time to reflect on your business journey? If like many business owners you rarely give yourself permission to stop and reflect, gearing yourself up for a new year and new decade is the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Firstly, take some time to think about the last year - both personally and professionally.

  • What has been your proudest moment?
  • What were the top five things that stood out (good or bad)?
  • What challenges did you overcome?
  • What opportunities did you explore?
  • Who was there to support you?

Taking the time to reflect on everything that has happened over the past year can give you a greater sense of appreciation of how far you have come and all the things that you have achieved. By writing down these thoughts and reflections of the past year, can increase their importance and be a great way to journal your business or personal journey.

Once you have reflected on the past year, then it’s time to really get your mind thinking and do the same for the past decade. It is amazing how much can happen in 10 years, and we often take for granted just how far we have come, how we have grown, changed and evolved.

Creating business goals for 2020 and beyond

After taking the time to reflect on the last year (and the last decade), whether you’ve reached your goals, or fell short, it’s now time to focus your energy on creating new business goals for 2020, and the years ahead.

Taking the time to create your business goals and strategy now, will help to set you up for success before the new year has even begun. So how should you set a goal? What key elements are essential when setting goals, to ensure you have the best chance of success?

Setting goals for 2020

When setting goals for the year ahead, there are a number of key elements you should include. One of the most common ways to create new goals is using the SMART goal setting method.

The SMART goal setting method helps you to create goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely. By using this method, you will be able to create goals that are realistic, and you can even set yourself stretch goals to encourage you to step even further outside your comfort zone.

The first step in setting your goals is that you should write them down, and keep them in a place that you will see often, or that you will schedule to review on a consistent basis (eg. weekly, monthly or quarterly).

How to set SMART goals

Setting goals that are SMART can greatly increase the likelihood of you achieving them. When setting your goals, they should include the following elements;

  • Specific - be detailed and clear about what you want to achieve
  • Measurable - how can your goal be measured?
  • Achievable - is your goal realistic with your current resources and time available
  • Relevant - based on your current situation, does your goal match the future direction of your business?
  • Timely - be sure to include a date that you want to achieve the goal by and that it is possible to achieve in that timeframe.

An example of a smart goal:

“I will grow my business revenue by 15% by the end of 2020, by increasing prices by 5% and attracting 5 new clients each quarter into the business”.

Setting smaller goals within each main goal

Another way to increase the likelihood of reaching the SMART goals that are set for the year ahead, is to break each of these down into smaller goals.

Instead of thinking of the goal as a yearly goal, ask yourself, during the next 90 days, what will be the main projects, initiatives, or business activities that you will undertake, to keep yourself on track with achieving your main goal.

By breaking your main goals down into smaller, bite-sized pieces, and measuring each goal’s progress throughout the year, you instantly make a goal feel more achievable. It is also important to share goals with your team, and empower them to be actively involved with the strategies used to reach each goal. The benefit of including your team in goal setting and throughout the yearly process often leads to improved workplace culture, and job satisfaction.
