  • DIRECTION ACCOUNTABILITY EXECUTION: PRINCIPLES FOR REACHING YOUR BUSINESS GOALS

READY, SET, GOAL! HERE'S WHY YOU NEED TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT GOAL SETTING

Setting achievable goals is at the heart of any good goal setting strategy. Your business goals will only be effective if you have a clear vision of what you want to achieve - and how you will achieve it.

Desire is the key to motivation, but it is determination and commitment to a pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek. - Mario Andretti

When establishing goals and objectives, try to involve as many people as possible who will be responsible for achieving these goals.

Not everyone has the means to follow through and do what needs to be done to achieve success in business. Truth is, it's no walk in the park.

Establishing business goals involves a fair amount of reflection into what makes your business tick, and the future you are looking to create. More often than not, people are likely to fall off on goal setting. With the demands of the day-to-day operations, most business owners feel daunted and the lack of motivation to set clearly defined goals creeps in. Now why is it important to set goals? Without goals, there is no clear direction. Goals are stepping stones to an end result. Getting clear on your strategy, setting your goals and objectives, and distilling them into actions is half the battle, so make it happen. Then it's about turning strategy into action through implementation.

Having goals set in place provides focus. Align your team by helping them understand the goals and priorities of the business. This helps get buy in from your team so that everyone is on the same page.

Goal setting also promotes organisational effectiveness and motivation. It brings focus and discipline to the team towards making progress. Visualising how you want to end this year is an encouraging process to undertake. With fresh perspectives, goal setting is indeed a crucial process to help you make the most of the year.

Often, managing change is difficult so the goals you set need to be realistic and have a timeframe in which you plan to complete them. Follow the SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely) principle in your goal setting strategy. This will make it easy for you and your team to break down your goals into manageable targets rather than having one big plan to aim for.

Working through 2017 without setting goals is like sailing a ship without having planned a course: you're likely to end up somewhere that you wouldn't want to go! It’s not too late to set your goals; Your Business Momentum is here to help.
