Invest in your team to see your business thrive

The success of your business depends on many factors. Undoubtedly the number one is the people you choose for your team. Without a strong, motivated and passionate team you will find your business limited. It’s important to recognise that your team is made of individuals who have all been shaped by their own circumstances and life experiences. An often-overlooked role of a leader is taking the time to invest in their people, understand their strengths and weaknesses, and help them develop their skills.

Businesses thrive when leaders look after their people.

I believe the best leaders are those who know how to engage and inspire their team. They understand that success can only be achieved through individual efforts that together propel the business forward. An important part of engaging your team is to inspire them to believe in your business and what it stands for. When people are passionate about their company, it shows. Rather than simply “going through the motions” of their role, they will find the individual drive to go above and beyond, prioritise their work, value their clients, and invest themselves in your business’ success.

What does this effective leader look like?

Leadership Levels from Jim Collins’ book, Good to Great

In ‘Good to Great’ Jim Collins describes the leadership journey beginning with a highly capable individual with a great deal of humility who is driven to produce the best results for the business. Inherent in this kind of leader is a clear growth mindset with a focus on human development. These leaders leave egoism at the door. They don’t micromanage or take on tasks that they shouldn’t – instead they trust their team, delegate effectively, and hold each team member accountable for their projects.

Liz Wiseman, author of the book ‘Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter’, investigates on the defining characteristics and behaviours that separate effective leaders from those who were viewed negatively by their teams. She refers to them as Multipliers - someone who uses his or her intelligence to amplify and bring out the smarts and capability of those around them.

They understand that the genius is in their team, not themselves. They don’t get caught up with day-to-day tasks that should be delegated, but instead take the time to truly manage their business.

Multipliers are talent magnets. They identify the best people for their team and know how to harness the power of the collective intelligence of a group.

By putting the right people in the right roles and helping their staff develop their talents, they are able to expand and grow more rapidly. This is what I believe truly shifts a business into the realm of success.

A true multiplier:

  • Focuses on their team and growing their strengths
  • Believes more can be achieved through their team than alone
  • Views each success as their teams’ success
  • Drives energy and innovation into each aspect of their business

What happens when you lead with this mindset of growth and development?

You multiply. Not only does your business grow, but each individual you’ve placed on your team has the opportunity to expand their capacity and reach new levels of success.

With this expansion comes new ways of thinking, a bigger think tank and the ability to solve more challenges and stretch growth beyond what you ever thought possible. Imagine what your business could achieve if this was your reality. Become a multiplier and see your business grow to new levels of success.
